DESIGNING A WEB-BASED INTERFACE FOR STUDENT PEER REVIEW ON A UNIX SERVER AgEcon

This report describes an application of and the procedures for developing a web-based interface on a Unix server, using a simple guestbook program. The advantage of the guestbook platform is that it is commonly available on college campuses and can be secured. The application facilitates problem-based learning and other active-learning goals in an undergraduate seminar in environmental law. This report provides an example of the application and reviews the programming necessary to accomplish the learning goals. There is an increasing demand in higher education institutions for training in complex environmental problems. Such training requires a careful mix of conventional methods and innovative solutions, a task not always easy to accomplish. In this paper we review literature on this theme, highlight relevant advances in the pedagogical literature, and report on some examples resulting from our recent efforts to teach complex environmental issues. The examples range from full credit courses in sustainable development and research methods to project-based and in-class activity units. Online Publication Enhances Integration of Current Research in the Classroom Ecology and Society

Integrating current research materials and issues into graduate courses provides students with exposure to emerging concepts and methods. New online journal formats that allow authors to include raw data and model code provide a unique opportunity to bring current research into the classroom. We developed a graduate-level landscape ecology assignment using data and code provided as appendices to an article in Conservation Ecology. Our assignment required students to engage actively with the published material, was positively reviewed by the students, and prompted valuable discussion.

Among the nontraditional teaching environments and methods available to improving tertiary education, collaborative learning (CL) seems to have much potential. This paper looks at the research on CL and how it might be able to address education issues such as changing student demographics and the rapid rise in information. In addition, a description and the many significant advantages of employing CL - including a deeper understanding of content, increased overall achievement in grades, improved self-esteem, and higher student motivation - are delineated along with some key elements of CL to help persuade that the method be utilized to its fullest potential.
